Shouldn’t Dodger Sheriff Know What the Laws Are?

Each year the Dodgers start out as “The Boys of Summer” and each year their fans end up as the fall guys.

What is the single most crushing blow to Dodger fans in this, another very disappointing season?

The incredible statement by Bob Daly that Kevin Malone has done a good job and will return as general manager.

Well, we’ve finally gotten to the truth.

With all of the speculation about morale and management problems with the Dodgers, time has fleshed out the culprit.

If I, as an employee, had been told by the highest levels of management in my company not to do something, I would abide by it under threat of dismissal.

Obviously, that is where Kevin Malone and I differ. Despite being told by the chairman and the team president to wait until baseball operations decisions have been made before contacting prospective manager candidates, Malone is out there, in public, courting Kevin Kennedy.

If Malone can so openly defy his bosses, then there is no doubt that he is capable of demeaning his subordinates, those being Davey Johnson, his coaches and the players.

Just think iceberg here. We know that there is more under the surface than just this tip about Kevin Kennedy. Malone is captaining a sinking ship and now we know he’s been the navigator too.

Ross Newhan needs to get real. Does he or anyone really believe that the search for a new Dodger manager will not commence until the official end of this season? The Dodger season was over long ago and the search for a new manager is overdue not premature. To call Malone’s actions insubordination is just naive. Maybe Bob Daly should publicly slap Malone’s hand to appease Newhan. I would like to slap his hand for not starting the search last year.

Gary Sheffield may be a great home run hitter, but if he beats the Duke’s record of 43 home runs for the Dodgers, his record won’t mean diddly-squat unless he does it in 154 games or less.

In another season where Dodger playoff hopes fade, it has become somewhat of a late summer Dodger tradition to look around and see successful rosters loaded with former Dodgers. This follows a season where we again witnessed former Dodgers--from Astacio to Zeile--having great years. EY’s been doing OK in Chicago, and Pedro’s having another career year with Boston. Even Nomo’s been blowing them by batters, and Charles Johnson is known for his offense.

But Dodger fans, take heart! In this age of budget-busting and underachieving (again!) our front office did make one giveaway trade that looks good in retrospect. To be fair, I will share my relief that Omar Daal and his major league-leading 19 losses haven’t added further tarnish to a trampled tradition.

Shouldn’t Vin Scully be giving us Padre scores and updates instead?
