No. 1 Trojans Drop Irvine in Water Polo

USC won its 14th consecutive men’s water polo game Saturday, defeating UC Irvine, 7-6, in Mountain Pacific Sports Federation play at UC Irvine.

The top-ranked Trojans (7-0, 1-0) took a 7-5 lead on freshman Tim Wollthan’s goal with 2:19 left.

The fourth-ranked Anteaters (5-2, 1-1) closed the gap on John Dorfi’s goal with 43 seconds left. They had a chance to tie the score, but turned the ball over with 11 seconds to play.

In nonconference men’s soccer:

UC Irvine 1, Gonzaga 0--Freshman Roger Davanger scored the game’s only goal on an assist from Ilia Nazarov in the 50th minute to lift the Anteaters (6-2). Gonzaga is 3-4.

In Big West Conference women’s volleyball:

Boise State 3, Cal State Fullerton 1--After losing the first game, 6-15, the visiting Broncos (5-5, 1-1) won, 15-2, 15-7, 15-8. Katy Shepard had 16 kills and 18 digs for Fullerton.

Utah State 3, UC Irvine 2--Amy Crosbie had 19 kills for Utah State (10-3, 2-0), which won, 15-5, 5-15, 5-15, 15-8, 15-9. Brooke Witt had 19 kills and 13 digs for the Anteaters (6-3, 1-1).

In Golden State Athletic Conference volleyball:

Biola 3, Vanguard 2--Vanguard won the first two games, but Biola rallied and won the final three for a 6-15, 11-15, 15-13, 15-8, 15-6 victory.

Vanguard falls to 0-9, 0-5.
