Costa Mesa’s a ‘Greatland’ for Target

Reflecting a growing trend toward one-stop shopping in retail, Target Stores will open its first “Greatland” store in Orange County next month.

The beefed-up Target, on Harbor Boulevard in Costa Mesa, will be about four times larger than the chain’s average store and will include a portrait studio, one-hour photo, pharmacy, optical section and mini-Pizza Hut.

While other Target stores have some of those features, none have all of them, said Mike Baxter, the new store’s manager.

Increasingly, it seems, retailers strive to be all things to all people. Ralphs Grocery Co.’s new store on Goldenwest Street in Huntington Beach has a candy shop, and areas for small appliances, hardware, toys and bicycle supplies, “upscale cosmetics” as well as a nutrition center.

With the new Target scheduled to open Oct. 4, about 100 workers are loading shelves of the 146,000-square-foot store with $6 million worth of inventory.

By opening day, the store will employ 200 people, Baxter said. A number of former workers at Fedco, the retailer previously at that site, have been hired, he said.

Target predicts the souped-up store will have sales of $12 million by the end of January, the close of its fiscal year. For the first full year, the company expects sales of $28 million.
