LAGUNA BEACH

The city’s staff is recommending that the Planning Commission today deny an operating permit to Long’s Drug Store, which seeks to operate a 16,000-square-foot retail store downtown.
Laguna Beach discourages chain stores because of their detraction from the uniqueness of the downtown area, where Long’s wants to launch its store on the 200 block of Broadway.
The store is not needed because plenty of other stores in the downtown area already offer similar merchandise, the city’s staff report says.
If the commission does not grant Long’s a conditional-use permit, the Walnut Creek-based chain can appeal the decision to the City Council.
The commission will meet at 7 p.m. at City Hall, 505 Forest Ave. Information: (949) 497-3311.
