Proposed School Site Passes Toxicity Test
The state Department of Toxic Substances Control has determined that the site of a proposed junior high school in Santa Clarita poses no threat to human health or the environment.
A letter of “no further action” from the department to the William S. Hart Union High School District allows the district to move ahead with plans to build Rio Norte Junior High School. District officials hope to open the school at McBean Parkway and Copper Hill Drive by July 2003.
The department tested for pesticides on the 20-acre site, which from 1947 until 1973 was used to grow winter wheat and barley, spokesman Hamid Saebfar said Tuesday. Samples taken from the site tested “significantly low,” he said.
The fifth junior high school in the Santa Clarita Valley, Rio Norte will serve students in several residential developments, among them West Creek, which the county Board of Supervisors approved Tuesday.
