Some broadcast and cable programs contain material included in the public school curriculum and on standardized examinations. Here are home-viewing tips:

* Today--”My Family--Mi Familia” (KLCS 8-10:30 p.m.) Critically acclaimed movie follows three generations of a Los Angeles Mexican American family through the Depression, the ‘50s and the ‘80s. Directed by Gregory Nava, cast includes Jimmy Smits, Esai Morales, Edward James Olmos, Jennifer Lopez and Mary Steenburgen. Contains mature language.

* Friday--”Flashback: The Human Journey--A Tale of Two Species” (TLC 9-10 p.m.) First of two episodes in a documentary miniseries that explores archeological evidence supporting the theory that modern humans emerged from Africa, while a similar-looking but biologically different species lived in caves in the Middle East. Part 2, “The Creative Explosion,” airs from 10 to 11 p.m. and follows the Middle Eastern species’ migration to Asia, adaptation to a changing climate and resources, discovery of a new food source in seafood and first signs of cultural evolution in cremation and rock art.

* Saturday--”Bookworm Bunch” (KCET 7-10 a.m.) Premiere of new Saturday-morning lineup built around six children’s books: “Corduroy,” “Elliot Moose,” “George Shrinks,” “Marvin, The Tap Dancing Horse,” “Seven Little Monsters” and “Timothy.” Also “Cobb” (KCOP 8-10 p.m.) Movie about a pioneering baseball hero considered by some the greatest player ever. Starring Tommy Lee Jones. Rated R.

* Sunday--”In Depth: Gore Vidal” (C-SPAN2 BookTV 9 a.m.-noon, repeats 9 p.m.-midnight) Three-hour talk and call-in session with writer Gore Vidal on the publication of the latest in his American Chronicles series, “The Golden Age: A Novel.”

* Monday--”History I.Q.” (HIST 7:30-8 p.m.) Initial episode of a new daily quiz show in which contestants win money based on their knowledge of history. Interactive versions available at https://www.historychannel.com.

* Tuesday--”The Elephant’s Empire” (DISC, 7-8 p.m.) Explains the elephants’ matriarchal system, including how mature female elephants lead and teach the herd. Also, “Building Big” (KCET 9-10 p.m.) First of five documentaries about architectural and engineering projects. Hosted by David Macaulay, author-illustrator of “The Way Things Work.” Interactive simulations and documentation available at https://www.pbs.org/buildingbig.

* Wednesday--”Places of Mystery: Machu Picchu and Nasca” (TRAV 7-8 p.m.) Describes an archeological site high in the Andes Mountains that was the spiritual and astronomical center of the Inca culture and the valley in southern Peru where vast quantities of pre-Inca artifacts have been found. Also, “Mailer on Mailer: An American Master’s Special” (KCET 10-11:30 p.m.) Study of author Norman Mailer, including an extensive interview.
