LAGUNA WOODS

In conjunction with National Pollution Prevention Week (Sept. 18-24) Leisure World, Laguna Woods, was among 832 businesses in Los Angeles and Orange counties honored by the California Integrated Waste Management Board, the state’s primary recycling agency.
The retirement community qualified for this year’s Waste Reduction Awards Program (WRAP) for saving dollars and landfill space by cutting the amount of trash it produces.
With its composting operation and newspaper, glass, aluminum and metal recycling programs, Leisure World has reduced its solid waste output by about 50%.
The community successfully beat the state mandate created by the board in 1989. The California Integrated Waste Management Act stipulates that all cities must recycle 50% of their trash by the end of 2000.
