U.S. Prosecutor Named to Federal Magistrate Post

LOS ANGELES — Stephen G. Larson, who heads the organized crime unit of the U.S. attorney’s office in Los Angeles, has been named a federal magistrate in Riverside.
Larson, 35, of Upland, succeeds Virginia A. Phillips, who was recently appointed a U.S. District Court judge.
Larson will be one of 16 magistrates assigned to the seven-county federal court district covering most of Southern California. His duties will include deciding pretrial issues in civil cases, conducting preliminary proceedings in criminal cases, and the trial and disposition of misdemeanor cases.
Larson has served as a federal prosecutor for nine years, the last two as head of the organized crime unit. He worked previously with the Los Angeles law firm of O’Melveny & Myers.
He was selected for an eight-year term by a committee of federal judges from among 60 applicants.
