Tunnel Rail Repairs to Mean Delays
Repair work on the train tunnel in the Santa Susana Mountains that links Simi Valley to Chatsworth will mean delays for Amtrak and Metrolink passengers through mid-October.
Delays between Oct. 1 and Oct. 15 will force passengers who would normally board trains in Oxnard, Camarillo, Moorpark and Simi Valley to instead take a special Metrolink bus to the Chatsworth station.
Parking will be expanded at the Chatsworth station in the event riders prefer boarding the train in Chatsworth, thus avoiding bus trips.
The tunnel was built in 1906 by Southern Pacific Railroad. Moisture seeping into the tunnel, plus normal wear, have damaged the track bed, requiring trains to slow to 25 mph when traveling through the tunnel.
The project will replace the existing track, allowing trains to travel at 40 mph while going through the tunnel, Metrolink officials said.
Metrolink service will be restored Oct. 16.
To make up for the disruption, Metrolink has announced discounts on October passes for riding the Ventura County line north of the Van Nuys station. Passes are discounted by one zone, roughly $33, for travelers coming to and from Northridge, Chatsworth, Simi Valley and Moorpark.
