Weinke Hurt in Seminole Rout

Quarterback Chris Weinke’s apparent sprained left ankle put a damper on No. 2 Florida State’s 59-7 Atlantic Coast Conference victory over Maryland on Thursday night at College Park, Md.

Weinke threw three touchdown passes before leaving early in the third quarter as the Seminoles, 5-0 overall and 3-0 in the ACC, cruised to their 17th consecutive victory, the nation’s longest winning streak.

The severity of Weinke’s injury was not immediately known. The Seminoles play at No. 10 Miami on Oct. 7. Maryland fell to 2-2 and 0-1.

Brad Lewis threw for a career-high 242 yards and two touchdowns and directed a late scoring drive as West Virginia defeated Temple, 29-24, in a Big East game at Philadelphia. The Mountaineers (3-1, 2-1 Big East) hadn’t won on the road since beating Pittsburgh in the final game of the 1998 season. Temple, which started the season 3-1 for the first time since 1987, fell to 3-2 and 0-1. . . . Idaho Coach Tom Cable and quarterback John Welsh have issued apologizes for Welsh’s comments after the Vandals’ victory over Washington State. Welsh criticized some Washington State players for not shaking hands after the game, calling the Cougars “bad sports, I guess. Hey, they lost. They can go to their locker room and go cry. I don’t care what the hell they do.” . . . George Welsh may be on his way out as Virginia coach. In a letter to an independent Web site devoted to Virginia sports, Athletic Director Terry Holland responded to fan concerns about the struggling team by saying there will be a timetable in place by the end of this season for the transition to a new coach.
