North Campus Getting Reprieve

Cal State Northridge will play home football and soccer games at North Campus Stadium through 2001, delaying the demolition of the half-century-old facility for at least another year.

The 6,500-seat stadium, Northridge’s home field since 1971, will be razed as part of the expansion of the $70 million headquarters of MiniMed, a biotechnology center that will absorb 40 acres of the 65-acre parcel of land formerly known as Devonshire Downs.

Northridge, scheduled to leave the Big Sky Conference after this season, will compete as an independent in football and likely will play home games at Pierce College. Northridge will join the predominantly California Big West Conference in most sports.

GOLF

* Tom Lehman and Duffy Waldorf will play a nine-hole exhibition today at Robinson Ranch in Canyon Country to benefit Bethlehem Lutheran Church and junior golf in the Santa Clarita Valley.

Activities start at 8:30 a.m. with continental breakfast at the church, near the course. Waldorf and Lehman will speak at a service that begins at 9:45.

Eddie Merrins, head pro at Bel-Air Country Club, will conduct a clinic at noon on the Robinson Ranch driving range. After a barbecue lunch, play begins on the Mountain Course at about 1 p.m.

Shel Magunson of Thousand Oaks won the B flight at 91-91-91--273, Susan Vopicka of Westlake Village claimed the C flight at 94-89-93--276 and Leora Sears of Woodland Hills took the D flight at 105-102-102--309.

* The St. Francis High Alumni Assn. will host its 12th annual benefit golf tournament Monday at La Canada Country Club.

* Ron Hornaday Jr. and Kevin Harvick, NASCAR Busch Grand National Series rookie-of-the-year contenders, have entered the Snap-On 100 NASCAR Featherlite Southwest Series race tonight at Altamont Raceway Park.

BOXING

* Heavyweight Lance Whitaker of Granada Hills will fight undefeated Robert Davis in a 10-round nontitle fight Oct. 7 at Mohegan Sun Casino in Uncasville, Conn.

Whitaker, 20-1 with 17 knockouts, is WBC Continental Americas champion and ranked No. 12 by the WBC. Davis is 21-0 with 13 knockouts.

SOFTBALL

* Darwin Tolzin has resigned as coach at Westlake. He also coached at Camarillo and Moorpark College.

SOCCER

* Frank Marino has been appointed girls’ coach at Westlake.

Marino has been the boys’ junior varsity coach for two years.

WRESTLING

* Crespi High will field its first team in 10 years. Michael Odman, former Chatsworth assistant, was hired as coach.

GYMNASTICS

* Alexander Klein won the men’s 30-34-year-old division title with a score of 44.90 points in six events at the Valley Senior Olympics on Sunday at Valley College.

Danny Kessler won the 40-44 title with 42.40 points and Ross Shaw the 45-49 division at 26.50.

Daneen Leidig won the women’s 18-24 title with 30.20 points.
