* When UCLA has the ball: Did the Bruins expand their playbook by two-thirds this week? Not really, but UCLA Coach Bob Toledo says he did not feel comfortable using more than one-third of the playbook with Ryan McCann at quarterback. With McCann out and Cory Paus back, look for more pass plays that involve quick, precise routes, particularly to running backs and tight ends. That should loosen the defense, to the advantage of tailback DeShaun Foster, held to 49 yards in 19 carries against Oregon. McCann came out of last week’s game because of a sore shoulder and hamstring but is available if needed. The Sun Devils have given up one rushing touchdown in their first three games. Freshman defensive end Terrell Suggs leads the Pacific 10 Conference with five sacks, and Coach Bruce Snyder says linebacker Adam Archuleta “is playing almost like he’s possessed.”

* When Arizona State has the ball: The UCLA coaches never really believed the Sun Devils would leave their Pac-10 opener in the hands of redshirt freshman quarterback Jeff Krohn. They won’t. Krohn was diagnosed Thursday with mononucleosis, so Arizona State returns to senior Ryan Kealy, who has passed for more than 6,000 yards in his career. Kealy, who was suspended for the first two games, was reinstated last week and relieved Krohn, throwing nine passes and completing four. The Sun Devils are beat up at tailback, with Mike Williams recovering from a sore ankle and Davaren Hightower still regaining stamina after a bout with pneumonia. UCLA’s top defensive back, Marques Anderson, is out this week after successful outpatient surgery for an undisclosed condition, so sophomore Audie Attar makes his first start at strong safety. Cornerback Jason Bell missed practice Wednesday because of a strained hamstring but should start tonight.

* Key to the game: If Paus completes some early passes, the Sun Devils won’t be able to crowd eight or nine men close to the line and stop Foster. The Bruins lost last week when Oregon stacked the line and stuffed Foster without getting burned by the pass.

* Fast fact: Toledo has beaten every Pac-10 opponent except Arizona State. He’s 0-2 against the Sun Devils.

* Line: UCLA by 7.
