Leonard Herman Smith, a retired attorney, died Monday at Ventura County Medical Center in Ventura. He was 67.

He was born March 31, 1934, in St. Petersburg, Fla., the son of Edward Charles and Olga Mae Bleyle Smith. He grew up in New York and graduated from high school in Kenmore, N.Y.

He earned a bachelor’s degree in political science from Michigan State University in 1955. For the next two years, he worked in Army counterintelligence.

On Aug. 19, 1961, he married Carrol Ann Reding in San Antonio. The couple moved to Inglewood while he attended UCLA Law School and worked part time as a systems engineer for IBM.

After he graduated from law school in 1964, the couple relocated to Ventura, where Smith practiced family law for 35 years before retiring in 1999.

He was active in the Ventura County Family Law Bar and had been a mentor in “Learned Leonard” family bar update classes.

He also was a past president of Ventura Youth Football and coached Little League.

He and his wife enjoyed traveling and had visited all seven continents. They had returned from Italy three days before his death.

In addition to his wife of 39 years, Smith is survived by sons Gregory of San Francisco and Christopher and Alexander of Ventura; his mother of Garden Grove; and a sister, Sally Horton, of Garden Grove.

Visitation will be from noon to 8 p.m. Friday at Ted Mayr Funeral Home in Ventura, which is handling the arrangements. Services are scheduled at 11 a.m. Saturday, also at the funeral home, with burial following at Ivy Lawn Memorial Park in Ventura.
