* Doris Merrill Magowan; Noted Philanthropist

Doris Merrill Magowan, 87, philanthropist and the mother of San Francisco Giants owner Peter Magowan. Born in Montclair, N.J., she was the daughter of Charles Edward Merrill, founder of Merrill Lynch. Her husband, Robert, was chairman of the board and chief executive of the Safeway grocery chain. He died in 1985. Magowan was a trustee of San Francisco’s Grace Cathedral and Dame of the Most Venerable Order of the Hospital of St. John of Jerusalem. An avid antiques collector, she founded the San Francisco Antique Show in 1979. She also served on the board of groups including the National Tropical Botanical Garden, Smithsonian Institution, World Wildlife Fund and the Most Venerable Order of the Hospital of St. John. On Tuesday in New York City after a brief illness.
