Fresh Outlook

SPECIAL TO THE TIMES

The Brandon Fields/Anthony Wilson Quartet, which plays tonight at the Baked Potato in North Hollywood, has performed only a few times, making its contemporary acoustic jazz quite fresh.

Fields, the acclaimed modern saxophonist who is starring with drummer Dave Weckl’s popular foursome, first played with the gifted guitarist/composer Wilson about 18 months ago on a celebrity band gig with actors Peter Weller and Jeff Goldblum, who play trumpet and piano, respectively. He immediately asked Wilson about starting a co-led group.

“I loved the rapport with Anthony,” Fields recalled. “He’s such a sensitive accompanist, and we played so well off each other. We both seemed to have a really good time. He’s got such a gorgeous tone and a great harmonic sense--he writes great tunes. I just found myself being inspired by playing with him.”

The previous Fields/Wilson engagements have used a variety of personnel. Tonight, the group will include organist Joe Bagg, who also plays bass lines, and drummer Mark Ferber. Everybody has played with one another in different situations--Bagg and Ferber make up Wilson’s trio and Fields has used Bagg on his own projects.

“I’m sure we’ll be simpatico,” Fields said.

The group will play new music written by both leaders, as well as jazz and classic standards.
