A 29-year-old inmate being held on other charges at Men’s Central Jail in Los Angeles was charged Thursday with the strangulation murder of an El Segundo woman in September.

Renal Wise is charged with first-degree murder in the Sept. 10 death of Mary Shoupe, 57.

The victim’s 11-year-old granddaughter, who was bound and gagged during the incident, helped create a composite drawing that was crucial in the investigation, said Sheriff’s Det. Lt. Ray Peavy of the homicide bureau.

Wise had spent six years behind bars for armed robbery and assault with a deadly weapon and was released from state prison last April, officials said. Wise was arrested again in November on rape and robbery charges unrelated to the El Segundo case.

The incident in the 1500 block of East Mariposa Avenue occurred about 11:30 a.m. when Shoupe’s granddaughter was confronted at the door by a man with a gun, sheriff’s deputies said. Both victims were bound and gagged, and Shoupe was led into another room and strangled, authorities said.
