A Simi Valley bicyclist was killed Saturday morning when he was struck by a car that ran a red light on Los Angeles Avenue, police said.

Manuel Ramirez Gutierrez, 32, was pronounced dead at the scene, said James Baroni, a senior deputy medical examiner with the Ventura County coroner’s office.

Police arrested Rafael Moreno, 29, on suspicion of manslaughter and drunk driving, said Police Lt. Andy McCluskey. Moreno was being held in lieu of $50,000 bail at Ventura County Jail.

Gutierrez, a busboy at a Denny’s restaurant on Sycamore Drive in Simi Valley, had just left his overnight shift and was riding his bicycle southbound on Sycamore Drive about 6:15 a.m. when he was hit, McCluskey said.

Moreno, who works at a restaurant in the San Fernando Valley, was also on his way home from work, McCluskey said.

It was unknown how fast Moreno’s 1994 Honda Accord was traveling when it hit Gutierrez, who was thrown through the windshield, McCluskey said. The speed limit on that stretch of Los Angeles Avenue is 45 mph.

Moreno pulled into a nearby gas station and called police, McCluskey said.

Gutierrez, whose children and wife live in Mexico, had worked at the Denny’s restaurant since September, officials said. He was living with a cousin in Simi Valley.
