66% Want Rebel Flag in Banner, Poll Says
Two-thirds of residents say they prefer the current state flag over a new design that would remove the Confederate battle flag from the top corner, according to a poll, which also shows that opinions remain divided along racial lines.
Sixty-six percent of those surveyed favored keeping the old flag. Only 22% said they want a new flag. About 1 in 10 said they did not know or were not sure.
More than half of the blacks surveyed said they want the new flag, but almost 3 in 10 said they did not. Four of five whites said they favored the current flag, while 1 in 10 wanted to change.
Voters will decide the issue in an April 17 referendum.
