7 Area Schools Earn Honors From State
Five area middle schools are among California’s best for 2001, the state Department of Education said this week, and two area elementary schools have been nominated for national recognition.
Castaic Middle School, Eleanor J. Toll in Glendale, New Vista in Lancaster, George Ellery Hale in Woodland Hills and Walter Reed in North Hollywood are among the state education department’s 157 California Distinguished Schools for 2001.
“They are a tribute to California and are living proof of what is possible when schools are committed to meeting high standards,” state Supt. of Public Instruction Delaine Eastin said. “Academic achievement, parent and community involvement, dedicated staff and outstanding professional development are exemplary in these schools.”
California First Lady Sharon Davis and the Distinguished Schools program’s corporate sponsors will congratulate representatives from the winning schools at an awards program May 11 in Anaheim.
Welby Way Elementary in Canoga Park and Stevenson Ranch Elementary are contenders for 2000-01 National Blue Ribbon School awards, which the U.S. Department of Education will hand out next month. Forty-seven other California elementary schools also were nominated.
