A traffic collision involving a Brea police squad car resulted in at least two deaths late Wednesday, authorities said.
The accident happened shortly after 9 p.m. when a black Honda turned left in front of the squad car at Esperanza Road and Fairlynn Boulevard in an unincorporated area of Orange County near Anaheim, said Mark Reeves, a spokesman for the California Highway Patrol. The intersection, he said, is just east of Imperial Highway, south of Orangethorpe Avenue and north of La Palma Avenue.
Both of the fatalities were traveling in the Honda, Reeves said, and both were declared dead at the scene. The identities of those involved in the crash were not being released late Wednesday, he said.
The officer was taken to Western Medical Center in Anaheim with unspecified injuries, Reeves said. He was reported to be in serious condition. Another person, believed to be a passenger in the Honda, was taken to UCI Medical Center in Orange, he said.
Police are investigating the accident to determine which car was at fault, Reeves said.
A Brea police spokeswoman confirmed late Wednesday that one of the department’s officers was involved in the accident but declined to comment further.
