* Last year: Stewart Cink, five strokes behind Ernie Els with 12 holes remaining, rallied to beat Tom Lehman by two strokes. Els tied for third.

* Last week: Tiger Woods won the Masters for a clean sweep of the four professional majors. Woods, also the 1997 winner, has won his last three starts. David Duval finished second, two strokes back.

* Notes: Woods is skipping the tournament. . . . Davis Love III, seeking a tournament-record fifth victory, tops the field along with two-time winner Tom Watson, Vijay Singh, Sergio Garcia, Greg Norman, Mark Calcavecchia and John Daly. * TV: ESPN (Today-Friday, 1-3 p.m.) and Channel 7 (Saturday, 1-3 p.m.; Sunday, noon-3 p.m.).

* Last year: Tom Kite won his first senior title, beating Tom Watson on the sixth hole of a playoff. Larry Nelson was eliminated on the second extra hole.

* Last event: Andy North and Jim Colbert successfully defended their Legends of Golf title April 1, holding off David Graham and Bruce Fleisher by three strokes.

* Notes: Watson is skipping the tournament, the first major of the senior season, to play in the PGA Tour’s Worldcom Classic. . . . Jack Nicklaus won the 1990 event in his first year of eligibility and added titles in 1991, ’95 and ’96. He designed the Cochise Course. . . . The Las Vegas Senior Classic is next week, followed by the Bruno’s Memorial Classic in Birmingham, Ala.
