Dale Bosworth, a second-generation forester who built a 35-year career at the Forest Service, will take over as the agency’s chief, Agriculture Secretary Ann M. Veneman announced.

Western Republicans, environmentalists and the timber industry applauded Bosworth’s appointment.

Bosworth, now a regional forester overseeing the Northern Rockies, will govern about 192 million acres of national forest land.
