Gonzalez Puts Hurt on Tigers

Juan Gonzalez didn’t gloat, laugh or smile. He didn’t have to.

The Cleveland Indian slugger proved he can still do it, despite one lackluster and unhappy season in Detroit.

Gonzalez, heckled before the game and booed throughout it, went one for three with two runs batted in in his return to Comerica Park as Cleveland defeated Detroit, 5-3, Thursday night.

“It was hard,” Gonzalez said. “But I concentrated on my game. . . . I understand. Fans are fans.”

He drove in the first run with a double to left off Chris Holt (1-1) in the first and hit a sacrifice fly off Todd Jones in the ninth.

“He did what a professional is supposed to do,” Cleveland Manager Charlie Manuel said. “He spoke back with his bat.”

Seattle 7, Oakland 3--Edgar Martinez hit a three-run homer to help end Tim Hudson’s winning streak, and the Mariners completed their first three-game sweep at Oakland by defeating the Athletics.

Hudson (1-1) was 20-6 for the A’s last season and had been 8-0 in nine regular-season starts since losing to Cleveland last Aug. 23.

Boston 8, Baltimore 2--Troy O’Leary went three for four with four RBIs at Boston and Shea Hillenbrand singled in a run in the fourth inning to extend his season-opening hitting streak to nine games, one behind Ted Williams’ team record.

Tomokazu Ohka (1-0) gave up runs in the first two innings but struck out the side in the third and retired 12 of his last 14 batters.

Kansas City at Toronto, ppd.--Large pieces of metal siding and insulation fell from the roof of SkyDome onto the field, causing the Blue Jays to postpone their game against the Royals.

The retractable roof was being opened when two of the three panels collided, causing two large tears.
