Bipartisan Resolution Is Best, Senator Says
The Senate compromise that pared President Bush’s proposed tax cut to $1.2 trillion from $1.6 trillion set a bipartisan tone that could resolve disputes over Medicare and education reform, Democratic Sen. John B. Breaux of Louisiana said.
In the weekly Democratic response to Bush’s radio address, Breaux said the 50-50 split in the Senate and the House’s narrow GOP edge made a productive working relationship between Democrats and Republicans a necessity.
“This bipartisan victory can, and should be, replicated on a host of other important issues facing this country, such as education reform, a patients’ bill of rights and modernization of Medicare and Social Security,” Breaux said.
