Hells Angels Chief’s Bail Hearing Delayed

A bail hearing for jailed Hells Angels leader George Christie was delayed Monday until June 28, but his attorney said he hoped to be back in court by early next week to prove legitimate sources of money will pay the fee on a $1-million bond.

Defense attorney Anthony Brooklier requested the continuance after a morning closed session, opting not to take testimony from bail bondsman Sevak Terhovhannisian. At issue is securing payment of the bail bond’s future premiums, because the company has agreed to accept less than $100,000--10% of the total bail--upfront.

“We’re trying to secure and have the court OK a $1-million bond, which is a lot of money,” Brooklier said. “We’re being very cautious and making sure all of our Ts are crossed and our I’s are dotted--we just had a couple of dots missing.”

Christie, 53, is charged with running a criminal gang that stole drugs from a Los Angeles Air Force clinic and peddled them to high school students. Last month, Judge Arturo Gutierrez rejected Christie’s bid to lower the bail to $250,000.

Lead Ventura County prosecutor Chief Deputy Dist. Atty. Jeff Bennett said prosecutors are still waiting for the defense to comply with certain requests for financial information.

“We’ll be back when we need to be back,” he said.

The hearing was postponed until June as a procedural matter to keep witnesses under the court’s jurisdiction, attorneys said. Brooklier said he will give the prosecution two days’ notice before asking to reconvene, which he hopes to do in a matter of days.
