Study Calls for Better Reporting of Campus Crimes by UC
- Share via
Some University of California campuses have not been complying with federal crime reporting laws, but there is no evidence that the schools covered up campus crime, according to a UC report.
UC Irvine and UC Riverside “were seriously out of compliance,” according to the report. UC Davis also was not in full compliance.
The report recommends some changes to ensure that the campuses are complying with a federal crime-reporting law. These include establishing uniform crime definitions and setting up a central clearinghouse to make sure all campuses are following the same reporting format and complying with the law.
UC’s report, which included an independent audit, showed that some campuses were ignoring or misinterpreting the law. Some problems included crime in residence halls being reported separately from other on-campus statistics.
