* Violet Ethel Hill Crawford, 104; Homemaker

Violet Ethel Hill Crawford, a longtime Ventura County resident, died Monday at the Camarillo Convalescent Hospital. She was 104.

Crawford was born Aug. 3, 1896, to James Edwin and Ollie Randolph Hill on a farm in Kremlin, Okla. Her father opened a trading post and the family moved to Atwell, Colo.

She met her future husband, George Crawford, in Atwell,and the couple married in Trinidad, Colo. They lived in Monte Vista, Colo., until 1924, when they moved to Oxnard.

She did not drive an automobile and depended on buses for transportation throughout Ventura County. Because of that, she worked with the city of Oxnard to reestablish bus routes that had been discontinued.

She was a homemaker, gardener, seamstress and poet. In 1975, her grandson, Gerald Crawford of Fort Collins, Colo., compiled and published a book of her poems, letters and verses.

Crawford was a member of the Oxnard Community Christian Church.

She was preceded in death by her husband and her eldest son, Bernard Arthur Crawford.

She is survived by daughter Ruby Arlene Kortan of Santa Paula; son Kenneth Richard Crawford of Grants Pass, Ore.; nine grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren; and 23 great-great-grandchildren.

Visitation will be from 10 a.m. to noon today with the service at 1:30 p.m. at the James A. Reardon Mortuary in Oxnard. The Rev. Ron Kaufman, senior minister of Oxnard Community Christian Church, will officiate. Burial will be private.
