In a single issue of Calendar, Phil Davis dissed Star 98.7’s Jamie and Danny for indecency on morning radio (‘You Can Say That-and Worse,” April 8) while Paul Brownfield dissed NBC’s “Ed” for excessive decency on network TV (‘Browse the Store, Try the Show”). Boy, this is one tough town. If Davis and Brownfield compared notes, they might discover that “Ed” is such a favorite of Jamie White’s that she recently constructed one of her show’s segments around a plot line from the previous night’s episode: whether it’s ethical and/or useful to hire someone to seduce a spouse you don’t trust.

Maybe both writers should seek common treatment at their local HMO: Apply for a sense of humor transplant. They just don’t seem to get it. The excoriated radio show is one of the best reasons to live in L.A., just as “Ed” is a darn good reason to live in America. These programs are hugely funny in radically different ways that can nonetheless be artfully interwoven by someone with intelligence and imagination. That’s what these performers and their writers get paid for. L.A.’s premier newspaper should be at least as demanding.
