Jesse Garcia; Retired Naval Base Official

Ventura native and retired Navy base official Jesse Joseph Garcia died Friday after a long illness. He was 82.

Garcia was born Sept. 22, 1918. He worked in civil service as superintendent of operations at the Navy base in Port Hueneme, retiring in 1979.

Garcia was a member of the Knights of Columbus and the Wally Byam Caravan Club International.

He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Delphine Garcia of Ventura; son Peter of San Clemente; daughter Caroline Hermanson of Lincoln, Neb.; four grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

He is also survived by a brother, Allen Garcia; and sisters Felipa Guevarra, Mary Tompkin, Maggie Romero, Rachael Crow and Gloria Garcia.

A visitation will be held Wednesday from 4 to 8 p.m. at Ted Mayr Funeral Home in Ventura, with a rosary at 7 p.m. in the chapel.

A funeral Mass will be celebrated Thursday at 10 a.m. at Our Lady of Assumption Church in Ventura, the Rev. Larry Dowdel officiating. Burial will follow at Ivy Lawn Memorial Park in Ventura.
