UC, Cal State Salaries Recovering but Still Trail Other States’

Salaries for faculty at California universities have recovered some ground lost during the recession of the early 1990s relative to faculty salaries in other states, according to a report released by the California Postsecondary Education commission.
Although California salaries still lag, the gap between salaries at Cal State and University of California schools and those at comparable institutions nationwide has narrowed since the mid-1990s.
In 1995, salaries for Cal State were nearly 13% lower than those at similar universities, and UC salaries were more than 10% lower. This year, though, Cal State salaries were about 8% lower, and UC salaries about 4% lower.
Cal State and UC salaries are measured annually against a select list of universities deemed comparable. A full Cal State professor’s average annual salary is $80,302; a full UC professor’s is $107,612, the report said.
