A veteran prosecutor and former Municipal Court judge will become Los Angeles County Dist. Atty. Steve Cooley’s second in command.

Cooley said Thursday that Assistant Dist. Atty. Lawrence Mason will become his chief deputy effective May 1. He succeeds Curt Livesay, another veteran prosecutor, who came out of retirement to serve as interim chief deputy after Cooley was elected last year.

Mason, 64, a Chicago native, was a deputy district attorney for 22 years before he was appointed to the Municipal Court bench in 1997. He presided in Inglewood until 1999, when he retired.

After his election, Cooley hired Mason as line operations supervisor in charge of all central operations and outlying offices. He had been a deputy district attorney from 1975 to 1997 and a legal advisor to the Los Angeles County Grand Jury from 1989 to 1991.

John Allen, 59, who has been with the district attorney’s office since 1983, was promoted to assistant district attorney and will succeed Mason as line operations supervisor.
