A woman tinkering with the front end of her car was crushed to death Saturday when the vehicle slipped into gear and rolled over her, police said.

The 40-year-old victim was discovered about 5 p.m. by a young boy in the parking lot behind her apartment building in the 8000 block of Langdon Avenue.

The woman was found pinned under her compact car, its engine running, said Los Angeles Police Sgt. Rod Grahek of the Valley Traffic Division.

Rescuers used equipment to lift the car off the woman, Los Angeles Fire Department spokesman Brian Humphrey said. She had suffered “massive trauma to her chest and pelvis” and was pronounced dead at the scene.

Investigators believe the woman jolted the car, knocking it into gear and causing it to roll over her.

The victim’s name was not released, pending further investigation by the Los Angeles County coroner.
