DaimlerChrysler has selected AT&T; Wireless Services Inc. to develop voice and data communications systems in Mercedes-Benz, Chrysler and Freightliner vehicles in North America.

The AT&T; Wireless digital network will result in faster communications and more services than the car company can offer now, DaimlerChrysler said.

Though neither company would discuss products they plan, some may be introduced by year-end.

The agreement is the latest example of efforts by auto makers to put everything from satellite-navigation systems to Internet access in cars and trucks. This industry, known as telematics, is forecast to grow sixfold to $24 billion worldwide by 2005 and to $47 billion by 2010, from about $4 billion now, according to a UBS Warburg report.

On the NYSE, DaimlerChrysler’s U.S. shares fell 73 cents to close at $47.07, while AT&T; Wireless fell 51 cents to close at $17.11.
