Encino’s Amritraj Stuns Top Player
Ninth-seeded Prakash Amritraj of Encino upset No. 1-seeded Rajeev Ram of Carmel, Ind., 7-6, 6-2, in the round of 16 Wednesday at the U.S. Tennis Assn. Boys’ 18 Super National Hard Court Championships in Kalamazoo, Mich.
Amritraj, ranked eighth in the nation in boys’ 18s, was a semifinalist in the boys’ 16 national hard court tournament last year.

Tenth-seeded Lester Cook of Sherman Oaks scored a 7-5, 5-7, 6-1 victory over No. 6 Jesse Witten of Naples, Fla., and No. 22 Travis Rettenmaier of Fountain Valley upset No. 12 Roger Gubser of Laredo, Texas, 6-3, 6-2.
Elizabeth Exon of Irvine and Monica Wiesener of Woodland Hills are the only unseeded players left in the USTA Girls’ 16 Super National Hard Court Championships in San Diego.
Exon defeated Hala Sufi of Tucson, 7-5, 7-5, to advance to today’s round of 16. Wiesener upset No. 9 Elizabeth Lumpkin of Naperville, Ill., 6-3, 6-4. Seventeenth-seeded Kady Pooler of Laguna Niguel upended No. 4 Anne Yelsey of Corona del Mar, 6-4, 7-6 (3).
Karina Porushkevich of Los Angeles and Jessica Nguyen of Chatsworth each advanced to the quarterfinals of the USTA Girls 14 Super National Hard Court Championships with victories Wednesday in College Park, Ga.
