Panel Suggests Paired Aircraft Landings

From Times Staff Reports

San Francisco International Airport should employ new air traffic control technologies to increase the number of arrivals at the airport, a panel of technology experts recommended Monday.

But even with advanced flight trafficking and navigation, the panel said it wouldn’t be until 2015 before flight arrivals could increase from the current 30 landings per hour to 45 per hour.

One possible solution: Pair up incoming aircraft through an on-board technology system so that they could land simultaneously.

Such a solution could increase the number of landings per hour to 60, the panel said. But it predicted the certification and approval process for implementing a pair-approach system probably would not be realized before 2010.
