Credit Where It’s Due

Here we are in Los Angeles, home of the screenwriter, where our hometown paper is The Times. On Aug. 10, there was a feature on scriptwriter Marc Hyman, describing how he came up with the idea and characters for the movie “Osmosis Jones” and his unusual involvement throughout the entire filmmaking process (“He Had More Than the Germ of a Good Idea,” by Gary Dretzka, Aug. 10). Meanwhile, in the same Calendar section, The Times’ generally good review of “Osmosis Jones,” by Jan Stuart, contains at least four paragraphs devoted to describing the movie’s story and jokes and credits its brand of comedy to the directors, the Farrelly brothers. Hyman is never mentioned.

Most writers aren’t self-promoters and they should be able to count on getting some consistent notice from the one newspaper that ought to understand and respect what they do for the movie business.
