L.A. County Runs on Waste and Inefficiency

Share

“County to Pay Inmates Millions” (Aug. 15) reports that the Sheriff’s Department acknowledges the inefficiency of the operation of the L.A. County jails and now the supervisors are to pay out $27 million of our money!

Having inspected said jails during my term as a grand juror (1995-96), the grand jurors were apprised of this inefficiency. Now it’s August 2001 and still no improvements have been made. And it will not be until 2003 that a computer system will be in place.

Does one realize what $27 million could have done? We could have contributed to many worthwhile causes that are grossly underfunded.

Who is to blame? We the citizens of Los Angeles County. Let us get out and vote instead of staying at home and complaining. Let us make changes in the way the Los Angeles County government is run. Let us tell the county supervisors to stop wasting our money, put it to good use, get things organized--and let’s get rid of those who are sponging off the government payroll.

Re the settlements for prisoners: Hopefully, the only benefit this may yield is crime victims’ ability to finally sue convicted criminals for what little they may receive.
