Longshot Captures Oaks
Golden Apples, a new addition to trainer Ben Cecil’s barn, rallied from the center of the track Saturday to win the $300,000 Del Mar Oaks by one length in a shocking upset.
Golden Apples, making her first start since running third at the Curragh in Ireland, was 21-1, the second longest price on the board. Under Garrett Gomez, she covered 1 1/8 miles on Del Mar’s grass course in 1:47 4/5 and earned $180,000 for owner Gary Tanaka.
Unraced as a 2-year-old, Golden Apples had won one of four starts this year in Ireland.
Affluent finished second, one length ahead of Reine de Romance.
Voodoo Dancer, the 13-10 favorite, made the lead at the top of the stretch, but wound up fourth.
