From Times Staff Reports

A helicopter pilot made an emergency landing on a shoulder of the Ventura Freeway in Thousand Oaks on Sunday morning after the aircraft lost power, authorities said.

Philip Vickery, 41, of Santa Monica and his passenger, Renee Barbieri, 36, of Van Nuys, were not injured.

About 11 a.m., a warning system in the Robinson-22 helicopter sounded, alerting Vickery of the engine failure, said Sgt. John Novak of the California Highway Patrol.

Vickery had rented the two-seater helicopter at Long Beach Airport and was preparing to land at Camarillo Airport when he lost power near Moorpark Road, Novak said.

The incident backed up traffic for about three miles in both directions until a tow truck crew pulled the helicopter onto a flatbed truck, Novak said.
