A Higher Calling

The Go-Go’s had a divine plan for their introduction at the Greek Theatre on Thursday night. “Good evening. This is God,” the script went. “There’s a couple of things that I wanted to share, just kind of pat myself on the back. I never get to take credit for anything I do, and I do quite a lot. Coming to the stage, something I’m most proud of. I’d like to introduce my finest creation: The Go-Go’s.”

Tapped to supply the female voice was “Mad TV’s” Alex Borstein, who has portrayed Monica Lewinsky and others on Fox’s cult hit. Borstein was recruited for the heavenly part by the girl group’s bassist, Kathy Valentine. The Go-Go’s are on tour in support of their first album in 16 years, “God Bless the Go-Go’s.”

“I’m a little Jewish girl from Chicago,” Borstein told us. “I thought it would be interesting to be a woman and be the voice of God.” And then, as her cell phone signal faded, Borstein cracked, “Even God gets bad reception.”

Survey Says

Prince Charles seems to be winning his acceptance campaign for longtime companion Camilla Parker Bowles, which included a very public snogging at a June charity event. As will-they-or-won’t-they speculation mounts in England, a new poll by the British newspaper the Guardian reveals that 43% of his subjects believe Charles should go ahead and marry her already. Nearly a third of the 1,004 people polled oppose the marriage; a quarter said they don’t know. The numbers have flip-flopped since August 1998--the year after Charles’ ex, Princess Diana, died in a Paris car crash. Back then, 46% opposed a Charles-Camilla union; only 35% approved.

Although it’s nice to take the public’s pulse, it’s not like a royal has to run for election.

Nice Recovery

No moss gathers on Barbara Walters. Yes, Connie Chung aced her out with Thursday’s Gary Condit interview. But ABC has announced that Walters will sit down with Mariah Carey, whose recent meltdown has been in the news. The chat will air Sept. 12--the day after Carey’s “Glitter” soundtrack hits stores.

Meanwhile, Mira Sorvino is denying that she had a knock-down, drag-out fight with the diva on the set of their upcoming movie, “Wise Girls.” No salt shakers were thrown. No hair was pulled, and nobody rolled around on the ground scratching and clawing. Sorvino, a Harvard grad, says only words were exchanged. We bet hers were polysyllabic. “We made up the next day and we’re on very good terms,” Sorvino told reporters in New York.

Thick and Thin

String bean actress Gwyneth Paltrow talks about life in a fat suit in September’s W magazine which, by the way, also is as hefty as a phone book.

Paltrow plays a chub-ette in November’s “Shallow Hal,” and rather than pull a Renee Zellweger, she opted for prosthetic blubber because it takes three hours to put on but only one hour to take off. (Our favorite kind of fat.)

“The first day I tried it on, I was in the TriBeCa Grand, and I walked through the lobby. It was so sad; it was so disturbing. No one would make eye contact with me because I was obese.”

Nor did Paltrow care for her clothing options. “I was wearing this black shirt with big snowmen on it,” she said. “The clothes they make for women that are overweight are horrible. I felt humiliated because people were really dismissive.”

Enough, Says Puff

Talk about a tough interview: Sean “Puffy” Combs was ready to walk out on Details magazine after he was asked about Death Row Records founder Marion “Suge” Knight, and the rivalry between East Coast and West Coast rappers.

“Time is money to me,” Combs grumps in the magazine’s September issue. “And you [are] wasting my time.” Touchy, touchy. “If y’all want to know ‘bout East Coast-West Coast, why don’t you ask Suge Knight? Why don’t you go interview him?”

Knight, freshly sprung from a California prison, feuded famously with Combs, the head of Bad Boy Records. So did their respective artists, Tupac Shakur and The Notorious B.I.G., before both rappers were shot to death.

Dumb Stalker Tricks

A former Rhodes scholar has flipped over “Dawson’s Creek” star Katie Holmes, according to the Toronto Sun. Police in Ottawa arrested Michael Willis after he allegedly called Holmes’ father, Martin, repeatedly to discuss his “engagement” to the actress.

Willis, who has pleaded not guilty to charges of criminal harassment and mischief, was sent to a psychiatric facility for 30 days. He also is accused of sending letters demanding $50,000 from NBC’s corporate parent, GE, claiming that Tom Brokaw stole his story ideas.

“If he comes in here, he will get treated like everybody else, and if he misbehaves, he will get a scud in the ear.”--Pat Dodds, owner of the Harbor Cafe, contemplating Prince William’s attendance at neighboring St. Andrews University in Scotland. Meanwhile, competing British tabloids, the Sun and the Mirror, refused to comment on rumors that they’ve each bought property in St. Andrews to maintain the Wills Watch.
