The Smithsonian Institution's Museum of American History has launched a Web site that shows 450 artifacts it doesn't have room to display in public spaces. The items include a sheet from the Gutenberg Bible, George Washington's sword and the desk microphone that Franklin D. Roosevelt used for his fireside chats.
At the Web site, http://historywired .si.edu/index.html, a small picture of the artifact pops out on the screen; you can click on it to get more details and to vote on whether you think this or similar items should be put on display. Less than 5% of the institution's roughly 3 million artifacts are displayed in its museums, officials said.
