The Cooper Companies Inc. in Lake Forest said its women’s health-care unit, CooperSurgical, agreed to acquire Medscand Medical, a Swedish maker of specimen-collection products, for $12 million.

Medscand’s products, which are used to detect cervical cancer, generated revenue of about $7 million last year, Cooper said. The transaction, which is expected to close this week, also involves the Medscand (USA) Inc. unit.

The agreement was announced after the close of regular U.S. trading hours. Cooper’s shares edged up 10 cents to $54.95 on the New York Stock Exchange.
