A Generous Portion for Players

The start of Del Mar’s final week will have something extra for horseplayers. There is a Pick Six carryover of $120,587, thanks primarily to Glitteringmischief’s $60 upset in Monday’s seventh race. Perhaps the most logical single is in the day’s feature, the $100,000 Generous Portion for 2-year-old fillies bred in California. Whitewinesipper, the 2-1 morning line choice, is the one to beat in the six-furlong race based on her debut at Hollywood Park two months ago. Owned by a partnership and trained by Cliff Sise, Jr., Whitewinesipper, a daughter of Apollo who was purchased for $40,000 at Barretts in May, won like something more than a maiden claimer in her debut against $40,000 foes at Hollywood Park. She won by eight lengths and completed the five furlongs in 57 4/5. She has trained well at Del Mar and will be ridden again by Alex Solis.
Race of the day: The sixth, a turf allowance for older California breds, is headed by an improving 4-year-old. Bastion, a chestnut son of Batonnier, has blossomed since being switched to the turf. Claimed for $16,000 in February by trainer Nick Hines for owner Paul Girdner, he has raced on the grass five times and has two victories and two seconds.

Who’s hot: Kathy Walsh. The trainer hasn’t started many at Del Mar, but she has done well with those she has run. Her latest winner came with Prenuptual Deal, who rallied from last to win Monday’s sixth.
*
Who’s not: The field in today’s first. Between them, the eight runners entered in the $32,000 maiden claimer were beaten a total of 901/2 lengths.
Exotically speaking: A pick four using Slew Summer, She Dance So So and No Markers in the fifth, singling Bastion in the sixth and Whitewinesipper in the seventh and using Surya, Evening Meeting, Delavallade and Zori in the eighth.
