The Society for Cinephiles holds its annual gathering, Cinecon 37, through Monday. The society will honor Jane Russell and Eddie Albert with Film Career Achievement Awards. Other guests of the convention include director Budd Boetticher and historian-filmmaker Kevin Brownlow. Films slated to be shown include Mary Pickford in 1921’s “Through the Back Door,” the 1943 mystery-comedy “Dangerous Blondes” and 1927’s “Breakfast at Sunrise,” starring Constance Talmadge. Screenings will be at the Egyptian, while the Cinecon Movie Memorabilia Show will take place at the Hollywood Roosevelt Hotel. See story, Page 34.

Saxophonist-flutist James Moody continues his five-nighter at Catalina Bar & Grill tonight. The former Dizzy Gillespie sidekick is known to counter his first-rate jazz with humorous asides, witticisms and some outrageous puns.

Mudhoney’s guitarists Mark Arm and Steve Turner could have been in Pearl Jam (their bandmates in Green River formed Pearl Jam precursor Mother Love Bone), and some think Mudhoney could have been Nirvana if the guys had taken things a little more seriously. Instead, the Seattle grunge architects enjoy cult-hero status for their independent spirit and awesome anthems.
