Title Dreams End for UCLA

The UCLA women’s soccer team stopped the top scorer in the country and dominated most of the game--outshooting its opponent, 28-8--but it was not enough.

Florida (21-3-1) advanced to the College Cup after freshman Monica Hoyles’ goal on a deflection at the 119:04 mark in double overtime gave the Gators a 1-0 NCAA quarterfinal victory Sunday at Drake Stadium.

“You can outplay teams and still lose,” UCLA Coach Jillian Ellis said. “Our goal was to win the national championship, and we fell short.”

Hoyles’ shot hit the side of a UCLA defender, deflecting past a diving CiCi Peterson.

The Bruins held NCAA scoring leader Abby Wambach to only three shots, all in the second half. But goalkeeper Jordan Kellgren made the difference. She was impenetrable, making a school-record 16 saves. Even Mary-Frances Monroe, who had 10 shots for UCLA (20-3), couldn’t get a goal, ending the Bruins’ 26-game home unbeaten streak.

Florida will play Santa Clara in the College Cup on Friday. Portland will play North Carolina in the other semifinal.
