Rescuer Finds Family Members Killed in Crash

Portland fire Capt. Steve Roe rushed to a car-train collision, where he found his wife and three of their children dead at the scene.

His wife, Sandy, and children Jason, 15, Tina, 13, and Devon, 7, were going to school when their car slid on an icy road into a Burlington Northern freight train.

Car-train wreck--A story Thursday in Section A misidentified firefighter Steve Roe. He is a volunteer firefighter from Culver, Ore., not a captain in the Portland Fire Department.

Police said the only survivor in the car was Roe’s 11-year-old son, Ethan, who was hospitalized in serious condition with lacerations and fractures.
