Greco Sidelined; UCLA Loses

UCLA may have lost something more important than a women’s basketball game.

Michelle Greco, the team’s leading scorer, was told Tuesday night by team doctors to sit out the game Wednesday night against San Diego, which the Bruins lost, 79-51, at Jenny Craig Pavilion.

She is expected to sit out Saturday’s game against 14th-ranked Colorado. There is no timetable for her return.

Greco--the defending Pacific 10 scoring champion who is averaging 23.6 points--said she is undergoing tests for an illness she would not reveal. She was in uniform and warmed up with the team Wednesday, but never left the bench.

“The doctors want me to sit out until they find out more stuff [about what’s wrong],” Greco said. “I hope to find out real soon. I hate sitting and watching.”

In losing their second in a row, the Bruins (3-3) had another woeful shooting performance.

After making 16 of 65 (25%) in an 89-42 noconference loss to Utah on Saturday, UCLA made 18 of 65 (27.7%) against San Diego.

Jalina Bradley had a career-high 13 points, a total matched by Gennifer Arranaga.

The Toreros (3-3), who led, 31-21, at the half, made 12 of 24 three-point shots, tying the record for most three-pointers by a UCLA opponent.

San Diego guard Kerri Nakamoto led all scorers with 18 points. Her six field goals--in nine shots--were three-pointers.
