Ex-Councilman Gets 4 Years for Corruption
A federal judge sentenced former Honolulu Councilman Andy Mirikitani to four years and three months in prison for his six felony convictions on public corruption charges.
Mirikitani, 46, who resigned from the council Saturday, is the highest-ranking elected official in Hawaii to be convicted of federal felony charges while in office.
“His criminal behavior fueled the public’s distrust and lack of confidence in government,” U.S. District Judge Helen Gillmor said before handing down the sentence.
Mirikitani was convicted on July 3 of theft, wire fraud, bribery and extortion.
