Roy Keeps Adding to Shutout Ledger

Patrick Roy stopped 26 shots for his sixth shutout this season and Radim Vrbata and Rob Blake scored as the Colorado Avalanche defeated the Columbus Blue Jackets, 2-0, Saturday at Columbus, Ohio.

Roy registered his 58th career shutout. He is 8-1-1 in his last 10 starts.

The Blue Jackets were shut out for the third game in a row, stretching their scoreless streak to 195 minutes and 21 seconds, the longest in the franchise’s two seasons.

Colorado is unbeaten in eight games (7-0-1). Columbus lost its fifth in a row.

Toronto 4, New York Rangers 3--Mats Sundin and Alexander Mogilny each had a goal and an assist for the Maple Leafs at Toronto.

Darcy Tucker and Travis Green also scored for the Maple Leafs.

Rookie goalie Daniel Blackburn started for the Rangers, who have given up 15 goals in their last three games.

Andreas Johansson and Peter Nedved scored third-period goals for New York, which also got a goal from Eric Lindros.

San Jose 5, Vancouver 3--Mike Ricci and Teemu Selanne scored 2:21 apart early in the third period as the Sharks rallied twice from two-goal deficits at Vancouver, Canada.

Vincent Damphousse and Marco Sturm each had a goal and two assists, and Patrick Marleau added a third-period goal for the Sharks, who extended their unbeaten streak to six (5-0-1).

Donald Brashear, Daniel Sedin and Brendan Morrison scored for the Canucks, who have one victory in their last six games (1-4-1).

Boston 4, Buffalo 2--Brian Rolston scored two short-handed goals and Joe Thornton added two at even strength at Boston.

Rolston is the first Bruin to score two short-handed goals in a game since Bryan Smolinski on March 27, 1994 at Washington.

Rolston has 14 goals and 10 assists, including nine goals in his last 20 games and has 15 points overall in that span.

Miroslav Satan and Vaclav Varada scored for the Sabres.

New Jersey 3, Washington 1--Sergei Brylin and Brian Rafalski scored second-period goals at East Rutherford, N.J., as the Devils reached .500 for the first time since Nov. 17.

Scott Gomez scored for the Devils, who extended their unbeaten streak to four.

Pittsburgh 6, Atlanta 3--Hans Jonsson and Michal Rozsival scored power-play goals at Pittsburgh, helping the Penguins extend their winning streak to a season-best three games.

The Penguins are 10-0 against Atlanta since the Thrashers joined the league in the 1999-2000 season.

Philadelphia 5, Minnesota 1--Jan Hlavac scored two goals in a span of 42 seconds, and Roman Cechmanek made 31 saves at Philadelphia.

Luke Richardson, who celebrated his return to the lineup with his first goal in nearly a year, Mark Recchi and Keith Primeau also scored for the Flyers.

Edmonton 2, Nashville 2--Edmonton’s Ethan Moreau had a goal and an assist for Edmonton at Nashville.

Mike Grier also scored for Edmonton.

David Legwand and Denis Arkhipov scored for Nashville.

Phoenix 3, Montreal 3--Brad May scored twice at Montreal as Phoenix extended its unbeaten streak to five.

May’s second goal tied the score with 3:20 to play in regulation.

Phoenix goalie Patrick DesRochers made 34 saves in his first NHL start.

Ottawa 5, Tampa Bay 2--Zdeno Chara, Daniel Alfredsson and Mike Fisher scored second-period goals for host Ottawa.

Radek Bonk and Marian Hossa also scored for the Senators.

Brad Richards and Vincent Lecavalier scored for the Lightning.

Carolina 3, Florida 2--Sami Kapanen and Josef Vasicek each scored goals with a two-man advantage for Carolina at Sunrise, Fla.

The Hurricanes won for only the third time in 13 games.

Florida, 1-5 in its last six games, is 1-1 under Coach Mike Keenan, who replaced Duane Sutter on Dec. 3.

Tom Barrasso had 34 saves, and the Hurricanes killed a Florida power play in the final 1:56.

Jenny Barber, the wife of Philadelphia Coach Bill Barber, died after an eight-month battle with lung cancer. She was 48.

Barber coached the Flyers against Minnesota hours after his wife’s death, at his family’s request.
