Nortel Networks Corp., North America’s second-biggest maker of phone equipment, named Greg Mumford chief technology officer.

The post had been vacant since February, when Bill Hawe resigned. Mumford, 55, had been president of Nortel’s Optical Long Haul Networks unit, which makes gear that moves and directs information through long-distance fiber-optic networks. He’s succeeded by Brian McFadden, 47, who ran the company’s Metro Optical Solutions business, Nortel said.

Shares of Nortel, based in Brampton, Ontario, fell 6 cents to $7.44 on the NYSE.
